It was my pleasure to view the New Jersey Water Color Society 80th Annual Juried Exhibition . The images contain a wonderful variety of interests and styles from traditional wet on wet water colors to detailed and dry brush techniques. The subject matter is varied, from detailed landscapes, still life and cityscapes to portraits and interesting abstract works.
In reviewing the works, the level of technical accomplishment is what I look for first.
I look for good drawing skills, a skillful approach to the composition, lost and found edges, and working with values. Most important, I evaluate whether a painting is a clean, fresh and confident watercolor followed by the creative expression of the artist. To move a painting from simply copying a photograph to art, the artist needs to express an experience,
an emotion, or try to tell a story.
This was a difficult show to judge because of the quality of the submissions.
Every entry showed a level of skill and it was hard to exclude any one. I encourage the members of the New Jersey Water Color Society to stay on their watercolor journey
with continued enthusiasm!
Keep painting and make it fun!
All the best,
